Hey, I’m Iva.

I’ve been in movement-building work for almost a decade. My work has included organizational development, strategy, and operations. I’ve been able to create a community across many beautiful Indigenous lands and currently reside in St. Louis, Missouri on lands of the Kickapoo, Shawnee, Ioway, Otoe, Delaware, and Osage peoples.

From growing relationships with incredible organizers, activists, and comrades across the country, I have learned many lessons, developed my skills, and held brave revolutionary moments with others.

I've worked with a range of organizations, including the Women's Foundation of Oregon, Community Alliance of Tenants, Coalition of Communities of Color, Portland State Center for Women's Leadership, Meyer Memorial Trust, City of Portland Office of Equity and Human Rights, Action St. Louis/Power Project, ArchCity Defenders, Demand Progress/Action, Coworker/Fund, and The Ops Collective.

I’m queer and Mexican and feel a lot. I want to abolish police and prisons and live in a world without binaries or borders.

Let’s build something together?

my
approach

The approach to my work is rooted in liberation, community, equity, and justice.  I believe that we will achieve a more equitable and just field through community building which is why I have organized, and regularly engage with, a community of other justice-aligned folks doing operations work, called JustOps.

Change & Risk

I embrace feeling comfortable with risk in order to liberate our communities. I believe cultures of risk aversion hinder the effectiveness of social change organizations, perpetuate unjust conditions, and contribute to an overall maintenance of the status quo both in organizations and in the dominant culture at large.

Operations Work as Justice Work

I uplift the vital importance of operations as a space to progress social justice work and the humane treatment of people. I recognize the role operations can play in perpetuating injustice against workers. I also recognize the power of operations as an organizational function in building creative, liberatory, and people-centered systems and processes that push organizations to work against ingrained systems of white supremacist capitalism, and treat workers with dignity and respect.

No Extraction

I do not believe that organizations and individuals should be able to gobble up resources, knowledge, and capital ad infinitum. I recognize extraction as an inextricable part of the perpetuation of white supremacist capitalism. The unfettered extraction of people, animals, and earth is violent and unsustainable. I believe in restorative models of knowledge and resource sharing. I believe in the restorative redistribution of knowledge, power, and capital.

Relationships

I believe in us! I recognize the incredible power of building meaningful relationships with one another, and the counter-cultural nature of building true community. I believe that our current social, economic, and political arrangements actively discourage the forming and maintaining of community by deploying both physical design and cultural norms against the natural human disposition to being together. I believe in the value of working against the dominant culture and in seeking each other out. I believe in the power of healthy conflict and the importance of being direct with one another.

I do not believe I am the sole contributor to operational strategy. It is important to me to center workers, build trusting relationships, and engage in deep collaboration with others.

“Iva has a solid understanding of justice work, not just in the theoretical, but how to align and enact such principles in processes and projects. She is committed and passionate about shifting systems within traditional institutional structures that have built their base and values off of white supremacy, capitalism, and anti-Blackness. Iva embodies adaptive leadership: she recognizes something doesn’t align, knows who to talk to and what questions to ask to get the information that will be helpful, and then synthesizes all those moving parts (many often contradictory/complex) into a forward moving manner. And it’s such an asset that she has this framework and skillset to be able to integrate justice and equity into it.”
